We are Coral Springs Strong.
Also known as “Coral Springs Strong” the Behavioral Health Access Program (BHAP) is a robust program offering free mental health services to more than 1,000 Coral Springs first responders and general employees. Established in 2014, the program has grown to include peer support, critical incident stress management, copay-free counseling sessions, trained clinician response team, addiction and recovery solutions, chaplaincy, family support, leadership, and training. In addition, the city offers dedicated 40 wellness hours, free access to a health & wellness center, a free gym membership, and access to an on-site registered dietician and nutritionist – all to promote mental and physical wellness.
The program has already shown strong benefits:
- A reduction in symptoms of post-traumatic stress
- Quicker return to a productive functioning state
- Increased job satisfaction
- Reduced worker’s compensation claims
- Reduced absenteeism
- Reduced errors
- Enhanced group cohesion
- Increased personal confidence
- Extended longevity
Extensive training is offered to cover common mental wellness needs. Individuals in key positions are trained to know the signs and symptoms of stress, ways to create a positive work culture, and have knowledge of wellness policies. Ultimately, leaders are trained to create a trusting environment where employees know that sensitive information is held in confidence.
Leaders are encouraged to be accessible and open to supporting employees with mental wellness issues or concerns. In addition, they are trained to demonstrate empathy and concern for employees who share their mental wellness concerns and refer employees to support options within the BHAP program, including clinicians or health and safety representatives.
